News to start off the new month: originally planned for autumn 2023, the opening date of the Reinhard Ernst Museum has been postponed to the first half of 2024. Museum founder Reinhard Ernst and Director Dr Oliver Kornhoff explain below the reasons behind the rescheduling.
Reinhard Ernst, Museum Founder
“The Reinhard Ernst Museum is intended to be an architectural masterpiece – my friend and architect Fumihiko Maki and me set out this goal from the very beginning. In recent months, we have realized that the required perfection is compromised due to time constraints and a lack of specialized personnel. We are by no means willing to compromise our quality standards because of self-imposed deadlines. We will therefore postpone the originally planned opening for the end of October to the first half of 2024. I am not happy about this, as it increases construction costs and adds to our stress. However, one thing is certain: Visitors will experience a remarkable museum after the grand opening.”
Dr Oliver Kornhoff, Director
“My team and I are eagerly anticipating the museum’s opening – our excitement is immense. We have advanced several projects: behind the scenes, we are already developing exhibitions for the coming years and engaging in discussions with international lenders. Another major focus is the relocation of the art collection to the museum’s depot, which we are also preparing for. The restoration, packaging, transportation, and future storage of 900 works of art is a colossal undertaking that we are meticulously planning. Only a few people have had the privilege of seeing the Reinhard Ernst collection until now. We look forward to sharing this privilege with our guests: a constantly changing selection will be on display in specially constructed rooms for them.”
Meanwhile, we look up to the sky and look forward to the museum’s bright future – we cannot wait to celebrate the museum opening with you.
