The Museum Reinhard Ernst will open at Wilhelmstrasse 1 in Wiesbaden in about a year. The Reinhard & Sonja Ernst Foundation is responsible for this museum of abstract art. Sonja Ernst, let\u2019s suppose we were having this conversation one afternoon in the new bistro at the Reinhard Ernst Museum, what would you order?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the afternoon I would choose a good\u00a0coffee and a delicious slice of cake.<\/p>\n

With the ground-breaking ceremony for the Reinhard\u00a0Ernst Museum, the focus has also been on your foundation. How did the Reinhard\u00a0&\u00a0Sonja Ernst-Foundation come about in 2004?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was established as the result of\u00a0longstanding, joint deliberations that developed over the years. Even today, we\u00a0still amend the foundation\u00a0statutes if it becomes necessary. For example, we added\u00a0to the foundation’s purpose of “art and culture \u2013 museum\u00a0construction” only later when\u00a0we decided our foundation would build a\u00a0museum.<\/p>\n

You have stated repeatedly that you have\u00a0had good fortune in life and would like to share this. How and where did your\u00a0ideas about\u00a0helping others arise?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Simply by keeping my eyes and ears open.\u00a0Ideas about helping don’t necessarily have to do with money or a foundation. I\u00a0think what is more\u00a0important is that when dealing with our fellow human beings\u00a0every day, “we don’t forget that we’re not alone in the world”. This\u00a0statement by my\u00a0husband’s grandmother has stayed with us throughout our lives.<\/p>\n

You were born in Wiesbaden and with your\u00a0husband you are now giving your hometown a museum for abstract art. Why is your\u00a0name\u00a0not also included in the name of the museum?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’ve often had to laugh about this issue\u00a0but I’m also happy to respond to you about it today. The affinity with art, the\u00a0collection and construction of\u00a0the museum comes from my husband. From the\u00a0start, I was convinced as to why he wished to do all this. He is still a\u00a0dedicated businessman.\u00a0What convinced me was that he wanted to introduce\u00a0children specially to abstract art, to unleash their creativity that our middle\u00a0class \u2013 the\u00a0greatest creative sector in our economy \u2013 also needs in future. I\u00a0also support wherever I can the fact that he combines this with his love for\u00a0non-figurative art.<\/p>\n

I proposed to our foundation board, whose\u00a0honorary chairman I am, that the museum should be named after my husband. Consider\u00a0the museums\u00a0that have been privately established: St\u00e4del, von der Heydt,\u00a0Brandhorst, Burda, Sprengel, etc. They all bear the name of their creators.<\/p>\n

Our foundation board resolved unanimously\u00a0to name our museum the Reinhard Ernst Museum. I was happy about this and still\u00a0am. I know that my\u00a0husband is already working on developing the MRE brand. He\u00a0is convinced that his name will remain but that over the years it will no\u00a0longer be\u00a0associated with the patron or the founder himself. Who thinks about\u00a0Mr St\u00e4del, when they go to the St\u00e4del Museum today?<\/p>\n

Incidentally, who says another social\u00a0project would not be created that bears my name?<\/p>\n

Supporting and educating needy children,\u00a0young people and older people around the world is a major aspect of your\u00a0foundation’s\u00a0purpose. Has there been anything in previous projects that\u00a0affected you particularly?<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the inauguration of our House of\u00a0Hope in Japan, we spoke a lot to old people but also children, who told us\u00a0about their suffering and fate\u00a0with tears in their eyes. That not only affected\u00a0us a lot but confirmed that we have done something right.<\/p>\n

Do you have a favourite work in the\u00a0collection?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes \u2013 a brilliant yellow Emil Schumacher and\u00a0a wonderful work by Frankenthaler. Both are hanging in our home and\u00a0have to\u00a0go to the museum.\u00a0That will be a\u00a0sad moment.<\/p>\n

How often do you visit the construction\u00a0site?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every four weeks on a Sunday.<\/p>\n
