The Reinhard & Sonja Ernst Foundation is the\u00a0sponsor and owner of the new Reinhard Ernst Museum. An institution that has\u00a0been committed to art and\u00a0culture, the preservation of historical heritage and\u00a0especially to children and the elderly since 2004. It was therefore very\u00a0important for this sponsoring couple\u00a0that young people in particular are also\u00a0considered when planning and implementing the museum and have the opportunity\u00a0to get to know the range of\u00a0abstract art. As such, Reinhard Ernst never tires\u00a0of emphasising that mornings in the museum will be dedicated to schoolchildren,\u00a0students and their\u00a0teachers and training staff. In addition to the exhibition\u00a0rooms, a very special creative room is available to them in the museum, where\u00a0you will look for\u00a0brushes and pots of paint in vain.<\/p>\n

An impression of the creative energy and interpretation\u00a0of abstract art can currently be seen on the occasion of the construction site\u00a0fence exhibition\u00a0Abstraction in the\u00a0Square\u00a0on the corner of Wilhelmstrasse and Rheinstrasse. Young people from\u00a011 educational institutions in Wiesbaden have created 76\u00a0fantastic works each\u00a0measuring one square metre and used them to embellish the 114-metre wooden\u00a0fence around the building site.<\/p>\n

However, the exhibition also established\u00a0longer-term connections with the schools. Among other things, a cooperative\u00a0venture has been concluded with the\u00a0IGS Alexej von Jawlensky School. In\u00a0addition to technical painting utensils, it already includes access to the\u00a0collection, scientific expertise and various\u00a0projects. One stroke of luck we\u00a0had were the committed teachers Elena Hartmann, Lisa Guhrsch and Esra Hofacker,\u00a0who included abstract art in their\u00a0curriculum at an early stage.<\/p>\n

In an interview, the three teachers tell us how\u00a0this initiative has developed since the opening event and how they have dealt\u00a0with the last 12 months with their\u00a0young artists in the Covid era.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

How was the feedback in response to\u00a0Abstraction in the Square?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The schoolchildren who were allowed to\u00a0take part in this project were all thrilled. They very much enjoyed the\u00a0creative work in the open air and\u00a0found it exciting to try out new painting\u00a0techniques. In addition, they were incredibly proud that their works of art\u00a0were exhibited on Wilhelmstrasse\u00a0and therefore accessible to the public at large.\u00a0A visit by and report on\u00a0Hessenschau\u00a0(TV\u00a0news programme) also contributed to the fact that the\u00a0schoolchildren felt they\u00a0and their work were very much appreciated.<\/p>\n

What do the schoolchildren take away from the cooperation between the Museum Reinhard Ernst and their school?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are still at the start of our collaboration and our schoolchildren were dealing with abstract art for the first time during the last school year. One aspect that is mentioned most often is the realisation of how difficult it is to create an abstract work of art. This has also contributed to the fact that the prejudices against abstract art \u2013 \u201cBut anyone can do that!\u201d \u2013 have been broken down and a new appreciation of this kind of art has developed. The schoolchildren now appreciate abstract art more and deal very specifically with the painting techniques that are behind it. We are seeing a huge increase in knowledge of design vocabulary, positioning in the image and use of colour.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Covid slammed the brakes on\u00a0our ambitions and our school routine was turned upside down.<\/p>\n

What ideas, approaches and projects are\u00a0there for this school year?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fortunately, some schoolchildren in years\u00a09 and 10 were able to get to know numerous artists in the Ernst Collection not\u00a0only in theory in the last\u00a0school year but also to try out their techniques in\u00a0practice. This exceptional optional subject will also be available for years 9\u00a0and 10 during this\u00a0school year. In the course of this year, they will each work\u00a0on a large-format work of art. In year 5, abstract art and the Ernst Museum will\u00a0be part of\u00a0the main subject for the first time this year. In previous years,\u00a0the focus was especially on the Wiesbaden Museum and the patron of our school.\u00a0This\u00a0year, we would like to shift our focus somewhat. The obligatory visit to the Wiesbaden\u00a0Museum will of course remain a fixture, especially as\u00a0there is the\u00a0Everything! 100 Years of Jawlensky in\u00a0Wiesbaden\u00a0exhibition from 17 September. However, at the same time, we would\u00a0also like to\u00a0arouse the schoolchildren’s curiosity about the new Reinhard Ernst\u00a0Museum and we are planning a little rally on site. Knowledge about the old and\u00a0the\u00a0new museum should not only be acquired theoretically this year. In practical\u00a0terms, we would also like to establish a connection between the\u00a0two museums,\u00a0not least because if the schoolchildren are familiar with the abstract Jawlensky\u00a0K\u00f6pfe\u00a0(Heads), they can\u00a0build a wonderful bridge to\u00a0the history of abstract art in the Ernst Museum. Our\u00a0practical work will involve first getting the schoolchildren to paint in\u00a0Jawlensky’s style and then\u00a0create their own new works in the form of alienated\u00a0abstraction. The highlight of the school year will be a painting event in public\u00a0in the summer of\u00a02022. We don’t want to reveal all the details yet, but before\u00a0the museum opens, the schoolchildren at MRE Open Air will give interested\u00a0citizens of\u00a0Wiesbaden an insight into their practical work and thus arouse\u00a0their curiosity about the Ernst Collection as well.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Was it difficult to get the schoolchildren\u00a0to move from figurative painting to more abstract expression?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, in fact most schoolchildren sometimes\u00a0find this step very difficult. This is where they need a lot of input from us\u00a0as art teachers. We see it as\u00a0enriching and challenging to sensitise our pupils\u00a0to the issues of colour, surface, space and effect in abstract art.<\/p>\n

How do you and your colleagues integrate\u00a0the subject of abstract art and the content of the Reinhard Ernst Collection in\u00a0your\u00a0curriculum?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The expansion of the school’s internal curriculum is a process that unfortunately had to pause temporarily due to Covid. We\u2019re still at the beginning but very glad that we were able to establish Abstract Art as an optional subject in the last school year. The focus this year is now on the younger schoolchildren. First of all, we will focus on the contrasts but also what we have in common with the Wiesbaden Museum and its works. As a culture school, in addition to our practical work in art classes, we also want our pupils to become ambassadors for the Museum Reinhard Ernst and that they will consider it their museum after it opens.<\/p>\n

From an educational perspective: what can schoolchildren learn from\u00a0abstract art?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To start with, it is mainly about how different it is from objectivity. The schoolchildren expand their understanding of art and intensify their aesthetic perception. Apart from the fact that they can contextualise the artists and their works better, getting to know about and understanding abstract art is often a question of why. \u201cIs that really art? But anyone can paint that\u201d were comments our schoolchildren frequently made at the beginning. Nonetheless, abstract art arouses their curiosity more than figurative art, as they do not understand it at first glance. It raises many questions, such as \u201cWhy does the artist paint it that way and not another way?\u201d or \u201cIn what context was the work of art created?\u201d These and other questions are enriching \u2013 not only for art lessons but also for the schoolchildren’s personal development.<\/p>\n
