Construction of the Reinhard\u00a0Ernst Museum continues at an undiminished pace. Let’s look back at the events\u00a0of recent days and weeks.<\/p>\n

Except for a few\u00a0remaining jobs, the shell is now complete. The next milestone is now being\u00a0targeted to make the museum hull tight. This point is reached\u00a0when all the\u00a0windows have been fitted and the basic roofing work completed. The last windows\u00a0will arrive in the coming weeks and the large glass area\u00a0facing the terrace\u00a0will be installed above the main entrance in mid-December. The assembly\u00a0procedure still has to be fine-tuned, as the western side along\u00a0Wilhelmstrasse is\u00a0difficult to access with heavy equipment.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

A small outbuilding\u00a0has been added to the rear of the property for the museum. After the walls were\u00a0in place, a crane then added the ceilings \u2013 like putting a\u00a0lid on. The\u00a0outbuilding is not clad with a stone facade or smoothly plastered; instead, the\u00a0exposed concrete allows a view of the board formwork’s wood\u00a0grain. The\u00a0electricity supply for the museum is located in the building and there is also\u00a0some storage space (e.g. for tables and chairs at the bistro).<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

From the construction\u00a0site’s large vehicle access area, which you can get to via Rheinstrasse, several\u00a0containers have moved to the northern side. There are\u00a0now a total of 34\u00a0construction containers on the property’s boundary with Commerzbank \u2013 and there\u00a0are more to come as the teams of workers are growing\u00a0in numbers. Sometimes,\u00a0more than 80 people are working at and inside the museum at the same time. For\u00a0their breakfast and lunch breaks but also for\u00a0offices and storing materials, a\u00a0whole lot of space is needed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

The granite facade of\u00a0the inner courtyard has been completely installed and the scaffolding is\u00a0currently being dismantled. It is now possible to see how the\u00a0museum is being\u00a0gradually enveloped in white stone. We described the particularly bright material\u00a0in more detail\u00a0here. The outer\u00a0wall above the restaurant\u00a0area and the entire northern facade are largely clad\u00a0in Bethel White; the scaffolding will be taken down here shortly. The facade\u00a0work continues in a\u00a0clockwise direction \u2013 along the east and south up to the\u00a0main entrance to the museum on Wilhelmstrasse.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

The current main entrance, however, is in\u00a0the east \u2013 i.e. at the rear of the museum \u2013 because this is where the largest\u00a0area is available for the\u00a0delivery of equipment and materials. A freight\u00a0elevator has now been set up at this point too. It reaches all the floors and\u00a0can take weights of up to\u00a0a tonne.<\/p>\n

As we are now heading into winter, a\u00a0special building heating system will be set up soon. It will ensure a room temperature\u00a0in which it’s possible to\u00a0keep working. This not only benefits the people who\u00a0are working on the building site every day and won’t freeze \u2013 plaster and putty\u00a0cannot be used\u00a0if it is too cold.<\/p>\n

The interior work is already in full swing.\u00a0In a spectacular operation, the road was blocked at night in order to bring the\u00a0three large staircases into\u00a0the building. Before that, exact measurements had\u00a0to be taken again as to whether the 13-metre-long and two-metre-wide staircase\u00a0structures\u00a0would really go around the corners when transported along the museum\u00a0corridors. But everything worked out as expected. Each stairway has 33\u00a0steps\u00a0and weighs as much as an elephant, i.e. around five tonnes. The stairs built by\u00a0the Wiesbaden company Huhle could already be walked on\u00a0but the glass\u00a0balustrades were still missing. You are not allowed to walk on the stairs at\u00a0this time for safety reasons.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Huhle was also\u00a0involved in the steel construction of the special skylight, a light dome for\u00a0the highest room in the museum. The metalwork for this will also be\u00a0finished\u00a0soon.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Sixteen drywallers are\u00a0currently employed in installing substructures for the walls in the exhibition\u00a0rooms. More than 40 tradesmen work on completing these\u00a0building services. Many\u00a0companies are working on the floors of the new museum at the same time. Coordination\u00a0of all the details on site therefore becomes\u00a0more detailed and more demanding,\u00a0so the project managers have to subject their plans to more stringent\u00a0inspection all the time. As long as the Covid-19\u00a0pandemic does not stipulate\u00a0any new restrictions on gatherings, the required number of people can be\u00a0employed at Wilhelmstrasse 1 \u2013 and get us a little\u00a0closer to our goal of a new\u00a0museum for abstract art every day.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n
