In the last\u00a0few days, the final ceiling at the Reinhard Ernst Museum has been concreted. The\u00a0roofers have already started their sealing work on the main roof and will then\u00a0tackle the insulation.\u00a0The bonded screed in the engineering rooms on the first\u00a0and second floors has almost hardened.\u00a0The power supply connections from the\u00a0ESWE utility company have been laid; tar work is currently\u00a0taking place so that\u00a0the traffic on Wilhelmstrasse will soon flow without interruption again.<\/p>\n

You will shortly\u00a0be able to experience the creation of a steel structure for what is known as\u00a0the\u00a0skylight \u2013 a dome of light on the roof at the corner of Rheinstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse.\u00a0This\u00a0structure is being built by the traditional Wiesbaden company Huhle, which\u00a0is in demand all over\u00a0Germany for ambitious projects in steel and metal. The skylight\u00a0tops the highest exhibition space at\u00a013 metres, and the dome is one of the most\u00a0complex structures in the museum building.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Steel\u00a0structures have also been erected inside in the meantime. For example, in the\u00a0large\u00a0engineering room in the basement. It is around 450 square metres in area\u00a0and six metres high. A\u00a0travelling trolley has been installed here in order to\u00a0lift heavy loads from the upper to the lower level.\u00a0This is essentially a\u00a0roller mechanism, which moves along a girder. It is reminiscent of the ability\u00a0of\u00a0cats to balance on high walls and move safely on them. The trolley in the museum\u00a0is capable of\u00a0transporting objects weighing up to a ton on the hook of a chain\u00a0hoist.<\/p>\n

Apropos heavy goods, in early May we are expecting the delivery of Tony Cragg\u2019s sculpture. The two parts of the artwork created especially for the Reinhard Ernst Museum that extends over two floors will then be lifted to the upper floor with a crane. A custom solution has had to be found for the installation of the work, because at the time of the idea for the sculpture was conceived, the structural analysis for the museum had already been completed. This is why the artwork will be placed on two steel girders facing upwards, which do not transfer the load to the ceiling below but to the walls. The floor structure in place later on means that visitors will no longer see anything of how this challenging task has been accomplished. But you can then pass on the knowledge you have just acquired to your amazed companions \u2026<\/p>\n

Behind the\u00a0successful development of recent weeks and months are many committed people in\u00a0Wiesbaden who are responsible for implementing the plans conceived in Tokyo. In\u00a0our last building\u00a0status report, we introduced Michael M\u00fcller, Salman Kholmi and\u00a0Dzenan Mehmedovic. At this\u00a0stage, let\u2019s meet two other people on the\u00a0construction site.<\/p>\n

\nPaula Klemp\u00a0grew up with and in museums. Even as a child, her parents took her to many\u00a0opening\u00a0events (where little Paula often waiting impatiently for the banquet to\u00a0finally open). Her father\u00a0worked as the director of science and art in\u00a0Frankfurt, also later as the exhibition curator and deputy\u00a0director of the\u00a0Museum of Applied Art. His daughter studied architecture at the Technical\u00a0University\u00a0of Darmstadt, completed six months of work experience at the Berlin office\u00a0of the June14\u00a0architecture firm and joined Schneider + Schumacher as a student\u00a0trainee during her university\u00a0course. The company will ensure the planning for\u00a0the Reinhard Ernst Museum is implemented; it\u00a0has already been involved in numerous\u00a0architectural projects of international status. After\u00a0completing her studies in\u00a02017, Klemp was taken on as a permanent member of the team at\u00a0Schneider + Schumacher.\u00a0Her initial projects included helping to plan the Goetheh\u00f6fe, an ensemble\u00a0of\u00a0buildings in the Grosser Hirschgraben in Frankfurt\u2019s old town. She then got\u00a0involved in planning\u00a0the Reinhard Ernst Museum, and she is now sitting with her\u00a0co-worker Marcel H\u00fcndgen and her\u00a0boss Jasmin Veigel in a container right next\u00a0to the building shell to coordinate the construction work.\u00a0Paula Klemp can\u00a0clearly identify the Japanese influence on the architecture; in her opinion,\u00a0Fumihiko\u00a0Maki\u2019s design is characterised among other things by its straight shapes,\u00a0stringent lines\u00a0and extreme attention to details. She is already looking\u00a0forward to the abstract art in the new\u00a0museum.<\/p>\n

\n\u00d0uro Opacic was born in Knin, in the hinterland of Dalmatia. At the age of 17, right after leaving school, he followed his father who was already working on building sites in Germany. After two years, he completed his military service in the Serbian armed forces, but then returned immediately to the Rhine-Main area. Opacic started working as a bricklayer, but he was no longer able to do this job due to a slipped disc. The Serb is a multi-talented worker on the building site and knows how to operate a crane. In his 46 years in construction, he has literally experienced quite a few ups and downs. He was there for the construction of the 155-metre-high towers of Deutsche Bank as well as for work underground on Frankfurt\u2019s metro system lines. \u00d0uro Opacic can also look back at the bridges he has helped to construct. At the Reinhard Ernst Museum he is employed as a concrete worker. \u201cIn November I\u2019m off\u201d, says the 65-year-old, as he then wants to retire. He still does not know whether he will continue to live near his children and grandchildren in Frankfurt or will move to his wife\u2019s relatives near Belgrade. He will probably do both. He thinks his last major project, the Reinhard Ernst Museum, is rather unusual.
