A year ago, there was still a large excavation\u00a0pit at Wilhelmstrasse 1. Now the building that has been erected in the meantime\u00a0is going to have part of its lid put on. A few days ago, the construction\u00a0workers were able to complete the first roof\u00a0section for the upper floor. In\u00a0order to process enough cement at this height in as short a time as possible, a\u00a0concrete pump with a spectacularly long boom and a reach of 63 metres was used.\u00a0It propelled 285 cubic metres of concrete on to\u00a0the museum roof, which was then\u00a0spread to make a ceiling that is approximately 50 cm thick. Depending on the\u00a0span, the concrete ceilings in the construction are between 25 and 50 cm thick;\u00a0to reduce the load with a large span, Cobiax\u00a0plastic balls were also used here\u00a0again. We already reported on this innovative process\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The entire structure\u00a0should be standing in the building frame by mid-May. Because the structural\u00a0calculations are aligned up to the height of the parapets \u2013 the upper end walls\u00a0\u2013 only then can the supports be removed in the floors below. In\u00a0the smaller rooms\u00a0of the museum, there are still countless telescopic columns; for the much\u00a0higher rooms that extend over two floors, entire load towers have been built\u00a0for stabilisation purposes. What passers-by along Wilhelmstrasse find\u00a0particularly eye-catching is the 150-tonne supporting structure made of red\u00a0steel girders. These too can only be removed from the building when the work at\u00a0the crown of the roof has been completed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

While this now heralds\u00a0the last stage of the shell work, the first connections are being undertaken in\u00a0parallel. The ESWE is taking care of the supply of drinking water,\u00a0telecommunications and district heating, which is why one lane of\u00a0Wilhelmstrasse\u00a0is closed to traffic. Platforms, steps and ladders are currently being produced\u00a0to be installed in the basement in a few weeks. Roofers have started sealing\u00a0the inner courtyard and will attend to the main roof from the end of\u00a0March. Work\u00a0on the fa\u00e7ade will start at the end of April. And on 7 May, Tony Cragg\u2019s\u00a0sculpture will be winched into the museum building. (More information about\u00a0this art project\u00a0here<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Behind the successful\u00a0progress of the last weeks and months are many committed people who are\u00a0responsible for executing the plans in Wiesbaden that have been drawn up in\u00a0Tokyo. And just as the art in the Reinhard Ernst Collection comes\u00a0from a great\u00a0many different countries, the team on the construction site is also a\u00a0multinational outfit. By way of example, we would like to briefly introduce\u00a0three of them.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

Michael M\u00fcller is\u00a0often stuck to the phone (\u201cI\u2019d like a seven with wood, to swap and use with a\u00a0crane\u201d) and coordinates the deployment of various tradesmen in his building container.\u00a0The tall northerner, born in Jever, makes his way from\u00a0Biebergem\u00fcnd in the\u00a0Spessart to Wiesbaden, a distance of 100 kilometres every day, in order to monitor\u00a0the deadlines and quality of the workmanship on the shell. He cannot make head\u00a0nor tail of abstract art (yet) \u2013 Michael needs specific\u00a0instructions, which is\u00a0certainly not the worst thing in his job. Non-specific paintings or sculptures\u00a0leave him baffled. What fascinates him instead is the museum\u2019s architecture: barely\u00a0one wall is standing on top of another, but he is impressed\u00a0by the projecting structural\u00a0elements and the particular heights of rooms. Michael is able to relax away\u00a0from his stressful construction job in his orchard or when hunting.<\/p>\n

\n

\"\"Salman Kholmi and a\u00a0co-worker from Montenegro are responsible for the logistics on the building\u00a0site. The 29-year old was born in Afghanistan; when he was two years old, his\u00a0family fled to Iran. His mother and brother still live there today.\u00a0As a\u00a0disenfranchised foreigner, however, he was denied schooling and training in the\u00a0Islamic Republic and there were no opportunities for him on the job market\u00a0either. For this reason, he set out for Europe in 2007. In Italy he trained as\u00a0a\u00a0pizza maker and kneaded dough for four years. Finally, he made his way to\u00a0Germany, where he has worked on building sites for several years. Salman\u2019s\u00a0alarm clock goes off in Offenbach at 5 am, so he can get to the state capital\u00a0in good\u00a0time by 7 am. But when he gets home in the evening, his work still\u00a0hasn\u2019t finished. Salman attends German courses from 7 pm to 9 pm, swots up on\u00a0vocabulary for his B1 qualification, plus he is also having lessons to get his\u00a0driving licence.\u00a0His four-year old child has been diagnosed with autism, so Salman\u00a0hopes his family will be allocated a kindergarten place soon. His wife could\u00a0therefore take some time out from her exhausting responsibilities as a\u00a0caregiver at home.<\/p>\n

\n

\"\"Dzenan Mehmedovic came\u00a0into this world in Novi Pazar. This town lies only a few kilometres from the\u00a0border with Kosovo. To be safe from the war, Dzenan\u2019s family moved to Berlin. The\u00a0young Serb attended school there as a teenager.\u00a0When he returned to his\u00a0peaceful homeland after four years, Dzenan completed his apprenticeship as a\u00a0motor mechanic. He then decided to emigrate to Germany. He visits his homeland\u00a0every year to be close to his parents and siblings and\u00a0he is at present happy\u00a0to accept the mandatory quarantine. The first German building site where Dzenan\u00a0was able to prove his skills as a tradesman 15 years ago was in the Dern\u2019sche\u00a0H\u00f6fe in Wiesbaden \u2013 the renovated old police\u00a0headquarters. While he worked as a\u00a0formwork setter at the time, today the 35-year old now has responsibilities as\u00a0a site foreman. He checks the attendance of 40 to 50 workers who work on the\u00a0museum shell every day and divides them into\u00a0groups. For this Muslim, the fact\u00a0that so many people of many different backgrounds, countries of origin or\u00a0religions can work together well, goes entirely without saying. \u201cPeople are\u00a0people\u201d \u2013 that is his philosophy. After all, you spend more\u00a0time with your\u00a0co-workers than with your family \u2013 which is why you have to get along well\u00a0during this lengthy period, to be constantly respectful and enjoy working\u00a0together. While the museum has been under construction, Dzenan has been\u00a0especially amazed at the large steel mounting parts \u2013 until now, he was only\u00a0familiar with them in high-rise buildings and bridges. Even more experienced\u00a0construction workers would not have seen anything like this in 40 years. He\u00a0realised\u00a0no later than at this point that with the Reinhard Ernst Museum he was\u00a0dealing with a very special building.<\/p>\n

\nIf you are interested in the exact description used by experts of formwork, exposed concrete and logistics, the Gem\u00fcnden construction company recently filmed a building site inspection with the Mainz University of Applied Sciences (department of technology, specialising in civil engineering), in which the special features of the museum building are described in greater detail for the students. But a warning: a lot of technical German language is used in the video, including terms such as centre hole bracing, formwork vibrators, pressure cells, drill chucks, stay braces or 6\/25 supports.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n
