Jasmin Veigel, 38, as the project manager in property supervision, ensures proper progress is made on the construction site of the Reinhard Ernst Museum. The qualified interior designer is a member of the executive board at the Frankfurt company Schneider + Schumacher, which has designed and constructed among others the Westhafen Tower (also known as \u201cRibbed\u201d due to its cider glass structure) and the underground extension of the St\u00e4del. We met Jasmin for an interview at her office.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Good\u00a0morning, Jasmin Veigel, how is the construction work going?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Excellent.\u00a0We\u2019re currently on schedule and within budget.<\/p>\n

Has the\u00a0corona crisis had a negative impact on the construction progress?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, on the\u00a0contrary. Many of the building workers who work for us during the shell\u00a0construction phase are from Eastern Europe. They didn\u2019t want to risk the\u00a0possibility of\u00a0quarantine by holidaying in their home countries but preferred\u00a0to work here instead.\u00a0This is why we always have all the workers we need. Of\u00a0course, we\u2019re still adhering to\u00a0the rest periods and all the additional hygiene\u00a0regulations since the pandemic started.<\/p>\n

So Covid-19\u00a0has not caused you any problems so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have had\u00a0to adapt to the situation of course. For example, we have coordinated\u00a0with Fumihiko\u00a0Maki\u2019s design office in Tokyo entirely via video or email, as the staff at the\u00a0Japanese office have been unable to travel to Wiesbaden since the outbreak of\u00a0the\u00a0virus pandemic and possible quarantine restrictions. Michel van Ackere, who\u00a0is in\u00a0charge of the museum building design, actually wanted to take on the\u00a0facade selection\u00a0here on site. Profiles and glass panes had to be discussed,\u00a0and the colour of the glass\u00a0was also especially important. Coordination was\u00a0then done via photos. The selection of\u00a0the natural stone fa\u00e7ade was also carried\u00a0out with the Maki office in Japan by remote\u00a0communication; in Japan, they are\u00a0of course precisely aware of the selected materials\u00a0and they take care of every\u00a0detail there \u2013 down to the door handles.<\/p>\n

Where do\u00a0we stand at present?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Half the\u00a0shell construction phase has been completed. While the ceiling elements of the\u00a0ground floor are now being completed at the front on Wilhelmstrasse, work is\u00a0already\u00a0underway on the first floor at the back. Every effort is being made\u00a0from Monday to\u00a0Saturday and a lot is happening in parallel. We assume that the\u00a0entire shell will be up\u00a0and ready on schedule in February 2021. Of the total\u00a0nine service phases that a\u00a0building normally undergoes, we are currently at\u00a0phases 5 to 8 \u2013 implementation\u00a0planning, tendering, awarding of contracts and\u00a0property monitoring.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0exactly does your job involve?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I organise\u00a0the work processes together with other staff members. We coordinate dates,\u00a0monitor costs, clarify interactions between various trades and document the\u00a0construction process. Many service providers are involved \u2013 structural\u00a0engineers,\u00a0building services, lighting and outdoor systems planners, to mention\u00a0just a few. Every\u00a0Tuesday, a major construction meeting takes place in the container\u00a0conference room.\u00a0This is where we discuss all the week\u2019s pending activities. During\u00a0the interior finishing\u00a0work, the number of participants in these meetings will\u00a0continue to grow. And of course,\u00a0there are also challenges to be resolved, as\u00a0no construction is completed without\u00a0discrepancies. But the mood on the\u00a0building site is good, everyone is working together\u00a0in a committed and cooperative\u00a0way. After all, they spend many months together in this\u00a0place, so a good\u00a0interpersonal atmosphere is important.<\/p>\n

Our company\u00a0develops the details in accordance with the design architects in Japan.\u00a0As the\u00a0regulations in Germany are in some ways different from those in Japan, we have\u00a0to check all the ideas for how feasible they are. Cooperation with authorities,\u00a0suppliers\u00a0or the fire brigade would be difficult to manage from Asia \u2013 especially\u00a0in corona times \u2013\u00a0which is why the client entrusted Schneider + Schumacher with\u00a0this.<\/p>\n

Is the\u00a0client often on site as well?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reinhard\u00a0Ernst actually comes to the building site every day to see that everything is\u00a0going OK. He does a tour of the site and has regular discussions with us if he\u00a0has any\u00a0questions. Mr Ernst is a discerning client. It\u2019s clear that he has\u00a0already been involved in\u00a0several new construction projects and he has a lot of\u00a0basic knowledge.<\/p>\n

Have you\u00a0also gained experience in building museums?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been a\u00a0site manager now for eight years. Most recently, I was given the job of\u00a0supervising the new construction of the German Romantic Museum in Frankfurt, which\u00a0was designed by the architect Christoph M\u00e4ckler. My colleague was involved in the\u00a0expansion of the Jewish Museum on the Museumsufer in Frankfurt, which was\u00a0designed by Staab Architects in Berlin.<\/p>\n

What do\u00a0you think is so distinctive about the architecture of the new museum in\u00a0Wiesbaden?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is very\u00a0straightforward and has wonderful clean lines. Alignments and stairways run in\u00a0such a way that visitors encounter many interesting visual references \u2013 for\u00a0example,\u00a0they can look from the foyer up to the top floor. Fumihiko Maki is\u00a0well known for creating\u00a0a particular sense of space. Museum patrons will\u00a0experience several surprise moments\u00a0when they visit the museum. As such, the\u00a0architecture doesn\u2019t seek to dominate but\u00a0adopts a rather restrained attitude\u00a0in favour of the art, especially in the exhibition rooms.\u00a0Everything about the\u00a0museum involves very high-quality workmanship. The complex\u00a0structural analysis\u00a0should also be emphasised. Few walls stand on top of each other\u00a0inside, and\u00a0loads sometimes have to be distributed over long distances. Despite the\u00a0amount\u00a0of steel and concrete used, the architecture exerts a very light touch. The\u00a0ceiling above the museum caf\u00e9 on Wilhelmstrasse also appears to float in the\u00a0air.<\/p>\n

Among\u00a0the building materials we saw racks with lots of black balls. What is that\u00a0all\u00a0about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

These black\u00a0balls are made of plastic. They are placed in formwork and reinforcement\u00a0and\u00a0then concreted. This creates cavities that mean the weight of the ceilings is\u00a0not\u00a0excessive. With what are known as bubble ceilings, which were also used at\u00a0the\u00a0Elbphilharmonie, it is possible to save up to 190 litres of concrete and\u00a0more than 450\u00a0kilograms of load per square metre. This means we can insert\u00a0larger ceiling areas\u00a0without supports.<\/p>\n

Are you\u00a0looking forward to seeing the art in this museum?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have to\u00a0admit I haven\u2019t personally found abstract art accessible up to now. I\u2019m more\u00a0interested in representational, traditional art. But I\u2019m very curious to\u00a0experience the art\u00a0in this museum and already look forward very much to walking\u00a0around the finished\u00a0building. But I will be able to admire one work of art long\u00a0before the official opening.<\/p>\n

What do\u00a0you mean by that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The presentation of a bronze sculpture by Tony Cragg is planned for the upper floor. And it\u2019s so large and heavy that it has to be hoisted into the building by crane before the museum is finished.
