This community of artists\u00a0was formed in the 1950s,\u00a0when Japan was undergoing great socio-political change. Its young members explored\u00a0new, radical forms of expression\u00a0through a combination of performance, painting,\u00a0installation and theatre. Many were influenced by their European and American\u00a0contemporaries,\u00a0such as Jackson Pollock and the European Informel school. The\u00a0Gutai Group achieved international recognition and its art has been and is still\u00a0exhibited worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0paintings were created based on very unusual methods. Kazuo Shiraga painted\u00a0with his feet, Akira Kanayama with a remote-controlled car,\u00a0Yasuo Sumi with an\u00a0abacus. The process was seen as just as important as the result. Sh\u014dz\u014d Shimamoto\u00a0(1928\u20132013), a cofounder of the Gutai\u00a0Group, also looked for ways to explore\u00a0artistic freedom. With his\u00a0bottle crash\u00a0technique, he threw bottles full of colourful paint on to laid-out lengths\u00a0of\u00a0material. A rare black and white photograph by Kiyoji Otsuji from 1956 \u2013 which\u00a0is also included in the Reinhard Ernst Collection \u2013 shows the\u00a0then 28-year-old\u00a0Shimamoto practising his art.
